Computerworld's Kathleen Melymuka cites a five year study funded by the National Science Foundation, Cisco, and Intel. In an interview with Melymuka, Marshall Van Alstyne, one of the study's authors, emphasizes the discovery that

“…one of biggest predictors of productivity is social networks … Social network analyses have indicators of where you are in the network — whether you’re central or peripheral."

Social network analysis lets you see any indivdual's "betweenness" and "reach."
